After birthing four children I knew I could help other women have a positive and memorable birth experience. I’ve assisted in the birthing of over 100 babies and have had the experience of working with all types of births including twins, C-sections, epidurals and even water births. I attended the Seattle Midwifery School and I am certified as a Birth and Postpartum Doula and Lactation Specialist. As your Doula, I will support all medicated or un-medicated births and I currently work with clients all over the greater Seattle area. To contact me please visit my website at www.janmartinka.com

What people are saying about Jan:

We couldn’t have been so strong throughout our journey without her and when we get pregnant again there is no doubt that Jan’s phone will be ringing.

I am a Certified Postpartum Doula and Chef, known as the “Doula that Cooks”. I provide one of two services to clientele. As a post-birth Doula, I prefer meeting families before their baby is born, in your home to figure out if we are a good match. Interviewing prior to a baby being born is not required, I will happily interview anytime. I like to work a minimum shift of 4 hours per day and I am available up to 6 hours, Sunday-Thursday. A Postpartum Doula, works in a family’s home similar to a Home Care Assistant, with a niche for newborn babies’ and families through the first year. I relieve the main caretaker of a baby, so they can rest, shower & do what is impossible while alone with a baby. I do light house work, laundry, run errands, give newborn feeding & sleep guidance, demonstrate newborn care, recognize and respond to postpartum mood disorders. Most importantly I give community referrals so a family can connect to their village in this transitional period.

As a Chef, I offer a ½ hour complimentary meeting in the client’s home where I interview about food preferences & allergies and view the kitchen where I will work. Then, I customize a menu and food shop. At a scheduled time, I come to the client’s home to prep, cook & package the food for consumption. Grocery expense and time spent shopping/preparing are added to my billable hours.

In a less formal arrangement I can cook with ingredients available in your home, like Chef in the Hat, Thierry Rautureau from Rover’s who makes monthly radio appearances, where caller’s tell him what they have in their refrigerators’ and he tells them what to make; I also have this talent. This option is good for people who want to eat healthfully but do not have time, skill or ability to cook. CSA Farm shares are my delight!

For either service, Postpartum Doula-ing or In home Catering I provide an invoice of billable hours with an NIP code that can be submitted to Insurance Companies for possible reimbursement. Payment is due upon service or mailed within 10 days.

What people are saying about Mama Doula

After the birth of my 2nd son I was left with a longer and more difficult recovery than anticipated, our family was out of town; my husband came down with a cold and was left to care for our 2 boys, me, our dog and himself. We didn’t plan for a postpartum doula but quickly realized we were drowning during this difficult transition. We met Jessica and she saved us! She came in, quickly fit right into our family – our 2 year old still asks when she is coming back! – and worked her magic. We have a farm share that comes each week that was sitting in the fridge waiting to be used and she managed, in 2.5 hours, to cook every single piece of produce in that box! We have a hard time getting through it each week and here we had a week’s worth of incredible food ready and waiting for us. She taught my husband a lot about cooking and eating for anemia and breast feeding, which he is ever grateful for since I am dealing with both at the moment, and she inspired our salad making to new heights with the fantastic things she put in the salads she made us. This would have been enough but she also got through a list of other things that needed done, how she did all of this and still found time to talk with me, my husband and our son, I do not know. As I said, she is magic. I whole heartedly, and with profound gratitude, recommend Jessica to anyone needing a postpartum doula. She was fantastic with the little things we needed done (laundry, filling soap dispensers, etc), incredible in the kitchen (I wish she made our food every week!) and kind and supportive of my recovery and situation. The emotional understanding and support is deeply restorative and I felt safe in her kind care. We felt so taken care of and safe with Jessica helping out our family and we wouldn’t have made it through the first weeks without her help.
